Bureau Talent at ECHA 2026
The international conference of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA) took place in Dublin from August 12 to 15. Researchers and education professionals from various countries shared up-to-date knowledge on giftedness and talent development. Birgit Broekhoven represented Bureau Talent and contributed to three presentations.
A key theme at the conference was the question of which students actually get the opportunity to develop their potential. Students from less socio-economically privileged backgrounds, multilingual students, and students who do not fit the conventional image of giftedness frequently go unnoticed.
During the presentation of the European Erasmus+ project Equity in Gifted Education (EGE), Birgit and her project partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and Kosovo shared their experiences regarding a broader and more equitable approach to identification and support. This project integrates universal screening, academic language development, and parental involvement.
The conference also highlighted that recognizing potential is merely the starting point. Students subsequently require access to challenging education, appropriate guidance, and teachers who recognize and nurture their capabilities. It is also crucial that students learn to articulate their needs and that parents are involved in an accessible and equitable manner.
Bureau Talent incorporates the international insights and contacts gained in Dublin into its training sessions, professional development days, and school support services. In doing so, we focus on aspects such as critically reviewing identification procedures, recognizing less visible potential, and sustainably embedding talent development into daily educational practice.
ECHA 2026 once again underscored the importance of bridging the gap between research and practice. Bureau Talent remains committed to fostering educational environments where all students—not just those who already clearly stand out—have the opportunity to discover and develop their potential.
